Why MOUSKA

What is really in your baby's nappy?

Around 7,000 nappies per baby, each pressed against the most sensitive skin on the body. We think that deserves a closer look.

Regular disposables

  • Superabsorbent gel (SAP)Petrochemical crystals made from oil. They hold a lot of liquid, but they never break down.
  • Traces of hazardous substancesFrance's health and safety agency (ANSES, 2019) found traces of dioxins and PAHs in disposable nappies sold in France, and proposed EU-wide limits.
  • Added fragrancesSome disposables are perfumed, and ANSES also flagged certain fragrance substances.
  • Up to 500 years to break downHow long nappies made with plastic can last in landfill. The UK throws away about 3 billion a year.
  • About £1,350–£1,650 per babyLeader-brand disposables from birth to potty. Then it all goes in the bin.

Other reusable nappies

  • A plastic-laminated wrapMost use a waterproof PUL or TPU wrap: polyester laminated with plastic, around your baby all day.
  • "Bamboo" that is really viscoseBamboo pulp dissolved in chemicals and spun into a man-made fibre. UK labels must call it viscose.
  • Microfibre insertsPolyester and nylon fibres. Most brands say they shouldn't sit directly against a baby's skin.
  • Inserts plus boostersLayers stacked for naps, nights and heavy wetters: more to stuff, wash and dry.
  • A drawer full of nappiesPocket and all-in-one nappies are washed after every change, so a full stash is usually 20 or more.

Nine reasons

Why parents choose MOUSKA

1

Kinder against your baby's skin

We choose natural fibres wherever we can, so what touches your baby is soft and breathable.

Many disposable nappies are built from plastic-based components and synthetic materials designed to lock moisture away. They're incredibly convenient, but they're still a highly engineered, single-use product. MOUSKA takes a different approach. Our philosophy is simple: if we can make it naturally, why make it synthetic?

2

No plastic waterproof shell

No PUL. Merino wool keeps wetness in, naturally.

Many modern reusable nappies rely on PUL (polyurethane laminate) for their waterproof outer layer. It works well, but it's still a plastic-based material. MOUSKA doesn't use PUL. Instead, merino wool does the job, chosen for comfort and performance. We don't believe reusable has to mean plastic reusable.

3

Why we don't use bamboo

Most bamboo fabric is viscose: bamboo pulp dissolved in chemicals and spun into a new fibre.

Bamboo is a plant, but the journey from plant to the soft bamboo fabric in most nappies is very different. Most bamboo viscose is made through a chemical process that turns bamboo cellulose into a regenerated fibre. It may feel beautifully soft, but it isn't simply woven bamboo. So MOUSKA uses no bamboo fabric, inserts or liners. We use fibres in a more straightforward form, merino wool, linen and cotton, alongside our moss. For us, natural isn't just about where a plant started. It's about what happens to it before it reaches your baby.

4

Moss, nature's own absorbent

Sphagnum moss soaks up to 20 times its own weight.

Moss has been absorbing and holding water in nature for thousands of years. Sphagnum is exceptionally absorbent, light and naturally suited to holding moisture. So instead of reaching for another processed synthetic absorbent, we asked: why not learn from nature? Our moss sits in a removable topper, so wetness is caught and held while the nappy stays practical and reusable.

5

Honest about every fibre

Merino wool, linen, cotton and moss, plus a little polyester we're open about.

We don't claim that every fibre in MOUSKA is untouched by modern manufacturing. Our cotton towelling has a light 10% polyester base, because that blend gave us the absorbency we needed, and it never touches your baby's skin. We'd rather tell you exactly what's in your baby's nappy than call it "100% natural" when it isn't. See every fibre.

6

Better for the planet

Used, washed, used again. Not thrown away after one change.

A disposable nappy is used once, then thrown away, and one baby can go through thousands before potty training. Nappies made with plastic can take up to 500 years to break down. A MOUSKA nappy is used, washed, used again, then handed down to another baby. That's what we mean by a longer life for your nappy.

7

Made for more than one baby

Pass it to your second child, then a friend, then another family.

We don't want MOUSKA to have a one-baby lifespan. It's designed to become part of your family's journey, and then perhaps another family's afterwards. One nappy. Multiple babies. Far less waste. That's the true value of reusable.

8

Better value over time

One investment, instead of a packet every week.

Disposable nappies look cheaper because you buy them little by little: a packet this week, another next week, and the spending never really stops. With MOUSKA you invest once, and if your nappies stay in good condition they can carry on to another child. The more lives your MOUSKA has, the better the value. Work out your saving.

9

Made to last

Chosen for strength, to keep going wash after wash.

We don't want to make disposable products disguised as reusable ones. We choose materials for their strength, resilience and ability to take repeated washing, because a reusable nappy only makes sense if it can really be reused. Buy less. Use longer. Waste less.

Why choose MOUSKA

MOUSKA pays for itself by age 2.

Disposable nappies look cheap at the start, but the price of each nappy goes up as your baby grows. MOUSKA is one purchase from birth to potty, made to be handed down, and it costs less over the whole journey.

The facts behind our sums

Same pack price, fewer nappies

The leader brand's packs cost about the same on the shelf, but each pack holds fewer nappies as the size goes up. By size 5, each nappy costs 75% more than at size 1.

SizeWeightPackPricePer nappyYour cost
Birth to potty£1,653

Three sizes cover the whole journey

PetiteBirth to 6kgAbout 0–3 months
Classic6kg to 11kgAbout 3–18 months
Grand11kg to 20kgAbout 18 months to potty

The leader brand's size 5 stops at 16kg. If your child potty trains later, you'd need size 6 disposables, which cost even more per nappy. MOUSKA Grand goes up to 20kg, so there's nothing extra to buy. We haven't counted size 6, so your real saving may be bigger.
